Salary: £27,000 – £37,000 depending on skills & experience + Benefits

The Role

We are currently recruiting for an Environmental Engineering Specialist to be based at our Port Talbot site or Technology Centre in the Rotherham/Sheffield area. The role exists to provide specific expertise and identify cost effective opportunities to optimise the performance and ensure environmental compliance of process systems across Tata Steel Europe, working with local teams to support implementation and delivery.

The scope of this job covers all Tata Steel UK sites with a strong collaborative partnership with Strip MLE. Sharing and learning may also include non-EU Tata Steel activities. The job requires the ability to build relationships with a range of professional contacts across the company and with similar people in industry and academia in the UK and/or Netherlands and/or the rest of Europe.

To carry out this role successfully you will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following duties:

-To lead and coordinate environmental improvement projects ensuring safe, efficient and effective working methods and relationships are in place. Provide support and technical expertise to ensure the environmental process optimization needs of TSE businesses are met in a timely manner, providing direct and practical on-site support where required

-Mentor and support colleagues to facilitate ideas generation, initiate project proposals and promote active collaboration  within Process Optimization in particular, and the rest of Group HSE

-To remain appraised of technical developments within the field of environmental process optimization, bench marking performance against best in class. Actively participate in knowledge exchange across Tata Steel, for example, through attendance at TSE-wide technical working groups

-To identify, lead and participate in environmental process optimization projects, investigating environmental issues and incidents, both on a proactive and reactive basis, to secure cost effective compliance and continuous environmental improvement for Tata Steel over the short to medium term. Typical systems involved will include, large industrial extraction systems, combustion processes, dust suppression, cooling and heat exchanges systems

-To develop and maintain links with external bodies, including universities, and identify and lead on opportunities to collaborate externally on relevant projects

 The Candidate


-Engineering or physics qualification to at least degree level but preferably Masters or PhD level

-The ability to troubleshoot and solve complex technical engineering / environmental issues through detailed on-site measurement, observation and assessment, and analysis and investigation

-Demonstrable experience in handling complex data sets, statistical analysis and mathematical modelling

-Laboratory and industrial site-based experimental experience ideally relating to industrial extraction systems, furnaces, dust abatement systems and environmental measurement equipment

-A background and/or detailed understanding of thermal fluids and/or process engineering

-Excellent communication and project management skills and experience in building effective national and international networking and business relationships

-Significant knowledge of industry leading environmental measurement and improvement techniques


-In-depth understanding of the steel industry, its production routes, products and supply chains

-A relevant professional qualification is preferable e.g. Chartered Engineer or Chartered Environmentalist as is membership of an appropriate scientific/technical institution

-Proven track record of coaching and mentoring colleagues
